22 de echipe formate din câte opt cicliști vor pleca pe cei 3.400 km ai Corsa Rosa, care va începe la Torino sâmbătă, 4 mai, și se va încheia duminică, 26 mai, cu un circuit unic în jurul Orașului Etern, Roma, care va include unul dintre cele mai renumite obiective turistice din lume, Coloseumul.
Giro d’Italia este o componentă cheie a portofoliului cuprinzător de ciclism în direct al Eurosport, care cuprinde peste 1.000 de curse în direct pe an, inclusiv fiecare cursă de Mare Tur și cursă UCI World Tour la masculin și feminin, UCI Mountain Bike World Series, UCI Track Champions League, plus fiecare minut de ciclism la Jocurile Olimpice.
Turul Italiei (în italiană Giro d’Italia) este unul dintre cele trei mari tururi cicliste ale lumii, al doilea ca vechime de pe continentul european. Este un concurs masculin care are loc din anul 1909, la feminin competiția este numită Giro d’Italia Femminile, ea având loc începând cu anul 1988. Printre inițiatorii competiției sunt considerați redactorii gazetei italiene Gazzetta dello Sport, care au fost iritați de existența Turului Franței și lipsa unei competiții similare în Italia.

Concursul a fost finanțat de diferite firme italiene și cu ajutorul clubului de ciclism italian ce a fost înființat de cotidianul Corriere della Sera. Turul Italiei a avut loc anual cu excepția perioadei celor două războaie mondiale.
La început turul a avut 8 etape, el avea loc dus întors între orașele Milano și Neapole, primul învingător al turului fiind Luigi Ganna. Învingătorul turului este considerat pe diferite perioade de timp la urcări, purtătorul tricoului verde, apoi cel la puncte purtătorul tricoului ciclamen iar învingătorul la combinat (intergiro) tricoul albastru, ca din anul 2007 învingătorul junior poartă tricoul alb.
