Din 2018 (FC Hermannstadt) o echipă de eşalon secund nu mai jucase finala competiţiei, ultima formaţie de liga a doua care a cucerit trofeul fiind Rapid (1975).
Hunedorenii lui Florin Maxim au disputat două tururi eliminatorii înainte de faza grupelor Cupei României Betano 2023/2024. Întâi au învins cu 4-1 pe Jiul Petroşani (Liga 3), apoi au trecut pe teren propriu cu 4-2, după ce au condus cu 3-0 la pauză!, de Csikszereda Miercurea Ciuc, colegă de competiţie în campionat.
Corvinul Hunedoara, prima echipă de liga secundă care triumfă în Cupa României după 50 de ani!
Corvinul a câştigat grupa ei şi a bifat şi prima victimă de prim eşalon, cu această ocazie. După un 2-0 cu Chindia Târgovişte, la Hunedoara a pierdut Sepsi OSK Sf. Gheorghe, 0-1 cu gol marcat în minutul 57 de Manolache. Câştigarea grupei s-a consfinţit printr-un categoric 6-0 în deplasare cu Progresul Pecica (L3).
Din sferturile de finală, deja băieţii lui Maxim au început să scrie istorie cu litere mari! Un 4-0 de poveste cu CFR Cluj, urmat de un 3-1 cu FC Voluntari în semifinale, când, deşi egalaţi, ardelenii au avut forţa să se desprindă.
Câteva date statistice după Corvinul-Oțelul
* S-au disputat până acum 86 de finale, o dată, în 1988, trofeul fiind considerat nedecernat.
* 11 dintre ele au fost decise de prelungiri, iar 9 la loviturile de departajare.
* La trei dintre finale a fost nevoie de rejucare. La prima, cea din 1934, după ce la cea inițială scorul a fost 3-2 pentru Ripensia, cei de la „U” Cluj au contestat-o, pe motiv că au considerat meciul având caracter amical și din acest motiv introduseseră în echipă doi amatori, astfel respectivul meci a fost anulat. La rejucare, când clujenii au considerat finala ca meci oficial l-au pierdut cu… 0-5! La celelalte două motivul a fost altul, neexistând pe-atunci în regulament loviturile de departajare, în caz de egalitate finala se rejuca. În 1940 acest lucru s-a întâmplat de patru ori, până ce Rapid s-a desprins de Venus. Iar în 1973 de două ori până ce Chimia Râmnicu Vâlcea s-a impus în fața Constructorului Galați.
* Apropo de această din urmă finală, a fost singura la care au lipsit echipele de prim eșalon, Chimia Râmnicu Vâlcea fiind din al doilea, iar Constructorul Galați din al treilea.
* Metalul Reșița (1954), Arieșul Turda (1960/61), Chimia Rm.Vâlcea (1972/73) și Rapid (1974/75) sunt echipele din eșalonul secund care au câștigat finala. CFR Turnu Severin ocupase locul 1 în seria I a Diviziei B în ediția 1940/41. Însă în 1942/43 când a câștigat Cupa, nu mai exista campionat intern din cauza războiului. În afara acestor patru echipe, au mai ajuns în ultimul act din eșaloanele inferioare: CAMT Timișoara (1937/38), Flacăra Mediaș (1951), Energia Metalul Câmpia Turzii (1956), CSM Baia Mare (1958/59), Dinamo Obor (1959/60), Siderurgistul Galați (1962/63), Foresta Fălticeni din C (1966/67), Constructorul Galați din C (1972/73), CSU Galați (1975/76), FC Baia Mare (1981/82), Hermannstadt Sibiu (2017/18), iar acum Corvinul Hunedoara.
* Finala din 2013 a fost prima la care au fost introduși arbitri adiționali, apelându-se la aceștia până în 2016.
* Finala din 2023 a fost prima cu sistem VAR
* 73 dintre finale s-au jucat la București, stadionul care le-a fost de cele mai multe ori gazdă fiind fostul „23 August” devenit ulterior Național, în 39 de rânduri (două meciuri fiind la finala rejucată din 1973)
* În afara Bucureștiului, doar alte 7 orașe au mai găzduit ultimul act: Ploiești de 4 ori, Brașov și acum Sibiu de câte 2 ori, Timișoara, Piatra Neamț, Târgu Jiu și Iași.
